Kumakura Junkichi (1920 - 1985) is regarded as one of the most influential ceramic artists of the 20th century. He was one of the founding members of the influential Sodeisha movement, a group of post war avant -garde ceramic artists whose influence remains strong today.
Kamakura is known for his abstract ceramic sculptures although he maintained a commitment to to include functional works.
His works can be seen notably in the National Museums of Modern Art in both Tokyo and Kyoto, and V&A Museum London. He is also featured in the Newcastle Art Gallery in NSW, Australia which has one of the largest collection of Sodeisha artists worldwide.
