while the use of dry lacquer was an ancient tradition for Buddhist sculptures in China and Japan its lightness allowing easy movement particularly in the case of fires it was nonetheless only adopted in Burma amongst the south east asian Buddhist nations. Its useage in Burma was likely through early contact with China and favoured in Burma due to the nature of the material enabling a softness in moulding of the features and allowing elaborate gold leaf decoration as in this fine example
