The figure shows Laos and Thai influences …the red and black lacquer is typically found on Khmer Bayon style Buddha figures. The face being long and slender reflects a Laos influence and the high pedestal with the central fold decorated with a Khmer gold pattern recalls Thai influences from the late Ayuthya period.

Back of the pedestal is carved with a standing figure of Thoranee the revered Earth Goddess protecting the Buddha by wringing a torrent of water from her hair to wash Mara the personification of evil away as the Buddha attains enlightenment. This scene completes the narrative of the Buddhas enlightenement and adds to the importance of this figure.
