This wooden Buddha figure is formed from a single block of Hinoki wood. The hands would have been separately attached and now lost. The wooden base is modern.
Height excluding base is 47cm.
The following features indicate a late Heian date of 12th century as seen on similar figures of the period in the late Heian -Jocho sculptural tradition projecting a serene presence
a large rounded head in relation to the narrow body
a quite face with high arching eyebrows, long narrow eyes and a small mouth recalling Chinese Tang sculptures
the strong frontality of the figure with the robe hanging naturally in rhythmic folds
beneath a relatively flat chest and a rounded abdomen the latter symbolizing composure and perfect mindfulness
A number of these figures are recorded suggesting a provincial or regional workshop hence we have listed it under the Mingei section although equally it is a fine sculpture.
