Scholars rock

a scholars rock usually represents a landscape as seen in the early Chinese paintings which the scholar could meditate within the confines of a studio however, some rocks can conjure up figures such as dragons etc. And in this example it can be said the rock Chinese in origin being obtained from a Japanese collection perhaps resembled the image of the deity Fudo Myo-o the immovable wisdom king with flames emerging from the back of his head a popular subject in Japanese art and with the literati.

the lid of the tomobako is inscribed archeological find from Ogaya where private excavations were carried out by renowned potters and researchers Kitaoji Rosanjin (1883-1959) and Toyozo Arakawa (1894-1985) his findings celebrated in the documnatry film Shino and the Old Man
