Kalong ware dish diameter: 23cm

Kalong kilns situated in an area between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in northern Thailand produced extremely fine and thinly potted wares during the 15th century and perhaps early as the 13th century . Many of the wares with a characteristic bold and distinct underglaze iron decoration as in this example.

Kalong wares are the most rare and sought after of Thai ceramics. This dish has a fan like pattern to the centre and cavetto and to the underside with a cloud like motif pattern suggesting a Chinese influence possibly following the bold and abstract patterns of Cizhou wares of the 13th to 14th centuries.

The dish is in perfect condition other than some soil discoloration to part of the underside.
