dish with underglaze iron fan pattern, Kalong kilns Northern Thailand
15th century
diameter: 23cm
Kalong kilns situated in an area between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in northern Thailand produced extremely fine a thinly potted wares during the 15th century and perhaps early as the 13th century . Many of the wares with a characteristic bold and distinct underglaze iron decoration as in this example suggesting a Chinese influence possibly following the bold and abstract patterns of Cizhou wares of the 13th to 14th centuries.
This dish has a fan like pattern to the centre and cavetto and to the underside with a cloud like motif pattern. It is in excellent condition other than some soil discoloration to part of the underside which is normal for these thinly glazed wares.
Kalong wares are the most rare and sought after of Thai ceramics.
