This figure represents the monk Sariputta one of the two principal disciples to the Buddha. Sariputta is seen kneeling to the right of the Buddha and the other disciple Moggallana to the left.
Sariputta was to become second to the Buddha in wisdom and knowledge of the Buddhist teachings. Seen here leaning forward with his head inclined upwards and to the left as if listening intently to the Buddha. His left hand is held firmly to the floor for balance and his right hand held open on his lap in the manner of the Buddha. The robe worn in the open mode is draped in naturalistic folds to the front and back finished with bands of ornate inlaid glass rosette decoration.
The sculpture is a masterpiece in naturalism, life size with fine details to the neck, collarbone and the fine hair curls. The best example we have seen.
