The bronze figure of the Buddha is a fine example of Lopburi style art with Khmer influence. The Buddha is seated in sattvasana position with his right hand pointed down to touch the earth, known as the bhumisparsa mudra, calling the earth to witness his defeat of Mara and thus attaining enlightenment.
Lopburi is a historically important town and province in central Thailand being part of the Mon Buddhist culture (Indian influence) which spread in central Thailand around 8th century and later becoming an outpost of the Khmer empire from the 11th century onwards. At the decline of Khmer empire during the 13th century Thai art and culture came into being with the Sukhothai and Lanna kingdoms with many provincial styles of art flourishing. Lopburi being one of the earliest recognized styles with Mon and Khmer influence.
Noteworthy: Lopburi bronzes are rare and the patination to this example is excellent.
