white robed Kannon… moon goddess
A white robed Kannon sits atop a rock surrounded by turbulent waters backed by the moon and sometimes referred to as the moon goddess. white robed Kuan-yin (Byaku-e) expresses the union of Transcendental Wisdom and Compassion. the sprig of willow branch in the vase represents spring and freshness, the renewal of life.
The Kuan-yin had a strong influence on Japanese artists from the 15th -17 th centuries and many versions were made although few survive today of which this is one example.
Note: the most famous scroll of Kuan-yin is by Mu Ch’i (chinese artist) dated to 1245 and held in Daitoku ji temple, Kyoto. It is considered the finest Zen painting.
