a miniature rock landscape being a classical Japanese art form known as Bonseki … literally translated as table stones.. developed as a meditative pastime during the Muromachi period along with the tea ceremony although its origins in China are much earlier.
Seen here are 15 rocks the same number as the celebrated rock garden of the Ryoanji temple in Kyoto.
This set was acquired from the distinguished author of Japanese culture, Alex Kerr whom had obtained from David Kidd the teacher and connoisseur of Chinese and Japanese arts and culture.
